Abstract

In order to reduce vehicle tire/road induced interior noise and improve ride comfort, tires with optimized damping should be adopted for a vehicle.

The tire acoustic optimization will be evaluated by a point damping method in this paper. The point damping method allows for a direct calculation and measurement of tire damping. It relates the tire damping to tire design parameters such as stiffness, mass density, material properties and dimensions. The point damping method will be a useful tool for tire acoustic optimization.

The point damping method will be illustrated in this paper. Tires will be simplified as built up structures such as beams, plates, shells, and rings for tire damping calculation. Single and multi‐parameter optimizations will be discussed. A laboratory measurement method for tire point damping will be illustrated.
